Stopping of a external bleeding on the neck

Equipment for the practical skill:

• gloves
• bandages
• cotton-cushion pads
• tourniquet

Clinical situation:      

• You see a person with a bleeding. Stop the bleeding

Order of the skill performance:

Preparatory stage:

• Put on protective gloves
• Perform a primary examination
• Identify a type of the external bleeding
  • verify the bleeding
  • visualize the wound
• Choose a way to stop the bleeding (find out a bleeding on the neck)

Main stage:

• Take a comfortable position for this manipulation, If it’s possible, use the help of an assistant.

• Immediately grab with your hand the patient clothing collar near the wound on the neck and press it on the wound (the danger is not only bleeding but also the air embolism of neck veins). In the absence of clothing, press down on the neck wound with your hand
• Press down for wound firmly to provide hemostasis and prevention of the air embolism
• Form the pressure element (dressing) like a pad of the required size.
  
• Put this pressure dressing on the bleeding surface of the wound over the first (clothing) layer.
  
• Press down firmly
  
• Take the tourniquet and put the middle part one above the pressure dressing.
  
• Bring the free end of the tourniquet to the opposite side in the armpit (axillary fossa).
• Stretch the tourniquet with both hands so it pressed the pressing dressing to the neck wound.
  
• Fasten two ends of the tourniquet with locking elements (buckle) or tie ends of the tourniquet.
• There is no need to note the time of a tourniquet application. This tourniquet can be removed only with the surgical care.
• Make sure that the bleeding has stopped.

Final stage:

• Monitor the patient condition
