Equipment for the practical skill:

  • faucet;
  • liquid soap in dispenser;
  • paper or fabric towel;
  • a container for the disposal of household waste (litter bin) or a container (bag) for dirty laundry

Clinical situation:

  • You have to wash your hands before a medical procedure

The procedure for performing a practical skill:

  • Turn on the faucet and wet your hands with water.


  • Apply enough soap to cover all hand surfaces and lather  hands


  • Rub your palms against each other.  Every movement you must make at least 5 times:
    • Rub right palm over left dorsum with interlaced fingers

    • Rub left palm over right dorsum with interlaced fingers


    • Rub palm to palm with interlaced fingers


    • Rub back of fingers to opposing palms with finger interlocked


    • Rub rotationally of left thumb clasped in right palm


    • Rub rotationally of right thumb clasped in left palm


    • Rub rotationally backwards and forwards with clasped finger of right hand in left palm


    • Rub rotationally backwards and forwards with clasped finger of left hand in right palm

  • Rinse hands with water
  • Turn off the faucet
    • When using the "elbow" faucet valve, close it with an elbow; hand contact with the valve does not occur

    • When using a faucet with a regular valve (not elbow), use towel to turn off the faucet

  • Dry hands thoroughly with a towel

  •  Put a paper towel into a bin or put a cloth (reusable) towel in a container for laundry
