Filling IV-set with solution

Equipment for the practical skill:

• Workplace for injections and intravenous infusions (see PS1 - Preparing of the workplace for injections and intravenous infusions) including
  • Medications in glass (plastic) bottles or plastic IV fluid containers of 0,5 (0,4) or 1 litre volume
  • IV stand (bottle or bag holder)

• • IV set with a needle of appropriate size;

• extra needle (needle of size 1.25 x 40 mm, pink needle hilt, G18  is preferred)
• medical records

Clinical situation:

• You are a nurse at a hospital’s therapeutic department. The doctor prescribed to the patient a intravenous infusion. Follow doctor's prescription

Order of the skill performance:

Preparatory stage:

• Prepare a workplace for injections and intravenous infusions (see PS1 - Preparing of the workplace for injections and intravenous infusions) incliging
• Before starting work, remove jewelry from hands
• Perform hygienic hand antiseptics
• Verify the name and dose of a solution for infusion
• Check expiry dates and integrity of the package of IV set and medication
• put on PPE (gloves, mask and goggles)
• Take the pincette and using it take from the sterile package a individual paper package with sterile swabs. Put it on the table and unfold paper wrapper using hands

  Main stage:

• Prepare the solution contaner (bottle, vial)  (PS6 - Withdrawing of medicine from a vial into a syringe)
• Take the IV set package and open it.  Put the empty package in the container “Package”.
• Make sure the clamp on the tubing is closed (close it if it necessary).

• Remove a cap from a IV set spike. Put the cap in the container for plastic.
• Insert the spike by full length through rubber stopper of the solution container (bag or bottle)

• Place the IV bag or bottle with IV set on the stand (bottle or bag holder)

• Compress drip chamber to fill halfway

• Open a roller clamp, and flush tube with solution (without removing the IV set needle cap) to absence of air in the tube
• Close the roller clamp and check the absence of air in the tube

Final stage:

• Hang the tube on the stand
