Clinical situation:

• You are a nurse at a hospital’s therapeutic department. Prepare your workplace for injections and intravenous infusions in a treatment room

Order of the skill performance:

Preparatory stage:

• before starting work, remove jewelry from hands, put on removable shoes 
• perform hygienic hand disinfection
• prepare the required number of syringes with needles, needles and other medical devices, medicines, antiseptics, chemical disinfectants, liquid soap
• check the expiration date and integrity of the packaging of medicines and sterile items,
• put on PPE (mask, glasses, gloves)

Main stage:

• disinfect external surfaces: table for disinfection, manipulative table, couch, intravenous injection table
  
  • wiping method:
    • moisten a surface cleaning cloth (wiper) with a working solution of a chemical disinfectant
    • wipe the outer surfaces of the medical device with a wipe (the exposure time of the chemical disinfectant should correspond to the disinfection mode according to the manufacturer's instructions)
    • place a wiper in the container “Disinfection of dressings, PPE”
    • moisten the second wiper with a working solution of a chemical disinfectant
    • wipe the exterior of the medical device with second wiper
    • place a wiper in the container “Disinfection of dressings, PPE”
    • wipe off with a third wiper the remains of the chemical disinfectant (if necessary)
    • place a wiper in the container “Disinfection of dressings, PPE”
  • spray method:
    • apply a working solution of a chemical disinfectant or an emergency disinfectant to the external surfaces of the medical device using a spray
    • withstand exposure time
    • wipe off with a wiper the remains of the chemical disinfectant (if necessary)
    • place the wiper in a container "Disinfection of dressings, PPE"

• place containers on the shelves of the disinfection table:
  • "Rinsing of syringes and other medical devices"
  • "Disinfection of sharp medical devices"
  • "Disinfection of syringes and other medical devices"
  • "Disinfection of dressings, PPE"

• fill containers with a working solution of a chemical disinfectant
• indicate on the tag (sticker) of each container with a working solution of a chemical disinfectant:
  • name of the working solution of the chemical disinfectant
  • concentration
  • exposure time
  • the date of preparation of the working solution

• remove gloves, mask, glasses
• put gloves and mask in the “Dressing Disinfection, PPE” container
• change your medical gown, wash your hands
• prepare a medical manipulation table:
  • place on the top shelf:
    • antiseptic
    • emergency disinfection chemical agent for disinfection of ampoules (vials)
    • syringes with needles, needles and other medical equipment necessary for injections, intravenous infusions and other medical interventions
    •  dressing material and ampoule knife
  • place on the bottom shelf:
    • sterile and non-sterile medical gloves
    • surface wipes
    • emergency disinfectant for disinfection of external surfaces
    • containers:
      • "Empty ampoules"
      • "Empty vials"
      • "Plastic"
      • "Packaging"

Final stage:

• start injecting or intravenous infusion
