Description of the clinical situation:

You are an emergency room nurse. You need to sanitize a patient who is admitted to a health care organization for inpatient treatment

The order in which the skill is performed:

  • Determine the type (full or partial) of patient sanitization (physician determines)
  • Provide the patient with information about the upcoming manipulation and obtain their consent
  • Ask the patient to remove outer clothing and shoes, which are returned to relatives (or stored until discharge in a designated area of the hospital health care organization)
  • Perform hygienic antisepsis on the skin of your hands
  • Wear gloves
  • Examine the patient for pediculosis and scabies
  • If it is detected, perform disinfestation treatment using an anti-pediculosis styling treatment
  • Have patient trim nails, women remove nail polish from nails
  • Give the patient a personalized soap and washcloth (individually wrapped)
  • Offer the patient a hygienic bath or shower (complete sanitization) by nursing staff under the supervision of a nurse.
  • When it is necessary to prepare the patient for surgical intervention:
  •  shave the hair in the area of surgical intervention with a single-use razor, using shaving gel (liquid soap), low-traumatic methods of hair removal - depilatories in the form of creams and gels are recommended.
  • After sanitization, give the patient a clean towel, a set of clean underwear (pajamas), a robe, and a change of shoes (slippers) to be disinfected (the patient's personal clean underwear and personal hygiene items can be used in the hospital).
  • If complete sanitization is not possible (depending on the severity of the patient), perform partial sanitization (skin wiping):
  • Put the oilcloth and diaper on the couch
  • Assist the patient to undress and assume the required supine position
  • Wear non-sterile gloves and a kleenex apron
  • Using a personalized sponge moistened with water, wipe the patient's neck, chest, and arms
  • Dry these parts of the body with a towel
  • In the same way, wipe your abdomen, then your back and lower extremities.
  • On the cover page of the case history, make a note of the sanitization of the patient with the date and signature of the person who performed the sanitization.
